What the hell is Archetype Dressing?
Panic-buying personalities ends at The Edit Room
“Archetype” sounds like something your tarot obsessed friend drops, or like something you have heard in your feminist philosophy podcast.
An archetype is simply a universal symbol, pattern of character or energy that shows up across cultures and time. Have you ever wondered why we all seem to associate wisdom with long white hair, or cute energetic guys with golden retrievers? Well, we all share in the collective unconscious common human templates.
These collective symbols show up in film, books, and in real life. When you meet someone, you’re categorising energy and patterns, you get an idea of who the other person is. And fashion isn’t separate from that.
Fashion is one of the fastest ways for us to perceive the world. Heavy boots tell a different story than kitten heels. And a silk slip will communicate something different that a wool blazer. But we all know that pijamas at the airport means absolute nonsense.
So what the hell is archetype dressing?
Archetype theory explains internal patterns of personality that are activated and motivation, and can be circumstantial. Meaning, you can flow on your archetype depending on what internal processes you are going through, what demands need to be met, and what responsibilities you may have. It’s your psyche becoming visible.
However, when you understand your dominant archetype things stop being random, and in clothing things start being coherent. By using archetypes in your styling you can start recognising pieces that feel natural. Instead of standing in front of the mirror negotiating between five different versions of yourself, you get a clear visual language to work within.
It’s about knowing your baseline so experimentation can have a map; feel authentic rather than chaotic. You get to ask yourself: “does this express my energy?”, and it organises your brain and decision making. Making your shopping feel less of a guessing game.
At The Edit Room you will take a short cute psychological quiz to discover your archetype between: The Archivist, The Performer & The Alchemist. Moving onto using your archetype as a quiet guide to discover the vintage pieces, and experiment your psyche traits through archival clothing.
You don’t need to know about the archetypes in depth, you will just feel it, and see the alignment in self awareness and not just aesthetic.
